Mamie met the then Second Lieutenant Dwight D. Eisenhower in October, 1915 while visiting friends at Fort Sam Houston, in Texas. The Douds had rented a house in San Antonio for the winter. The young officer, just out of West Point, courted Miss Doud and on February 14, 1916, they formally announced their engagement. Eisenhower's personal life changed during his military years. He married a young woman named Mamie Doud in 1916. The following year they had a son named Doud Dwight; however, the boy became sick and died at the age of three.
